You say Salut in french ONLY to your friends as it's very informal, you wouldn't use it to speak to strangers. You use salute to mean Hi to your friends and also when saying goodbye so it means hi at the start of a conversation and goodbye when your parting. like when in english some people say see ya, or cheerio. so there you have it salut can mean both hi and bye! Formal french like when your speaking to strangers is Bonjour (hello) and Au revoir (goodbye)

Only to a good friend, it's not appropriate unless you know the person well. It's very informal much like 'Hi'.

you would say 'salut' only informally. if you were speaking to an adult or someone you dont know you would say 'bonjour'. the english equivalent is 'hi' for 'salut' and 'hello, good day' sort of thing for 'bonjour'
