Rosetta Stone is very expensive and if it is not worth the money then I don't want to even try it. I am planning on learning Korean(Hangul) then Chinese(Mandarin) and Spanish and then see where that goes(yes I am very interested in languages and travelling the world) So if you have tried it or know someone who has tried it an answer or opinion would be very helpful! Thanks! :]

I have used Rosetta Stone for German, Italian, and Korean.

I've found that for German and Italian I picked it up quickly and it was very helpful. However, I got lost often in Korean (because it's so completely different, I believe) and needed to have a friend explain it to me.

I tried rosetta stone for Spanish. It does not have any translation, grammar or conjugation instructions so it will be very hard to go beyond the basics with it. It is good for the basics as it is pure memorization. There is no way to be fluent with it. Their program is based on the same thing where you see these 4 pictures over and over again. I was disappointed especially for the price I paid. If you already have a strong base, you will know most of the content.

My college uses another software: tell me more. My goal was to become fluent so it was perfect for me and I bought their individual version. It has a lot of different activities: picture/word association, videos, dialogues,..., includes also grammar and conjugation. It has also more content than any other language software. Their speech recognition is great so you can have a dialogue with the computer. You can contact them to get a free demo and also ask for a Rosetta Stone demo to compare, visit independent reviews websites(About.com, ...).

The best way to learn a language would be through immersion, visiting these countries. Learning a language will require some time. In addition to software, you can have books which are useful as well. Audio CDs like Pimsleur for instance might help you out but you cannot get any feedback on your pronunciation so I did not like it so much.

I've tried it for Spanish, French, and Japanese.

I'm currently fluent in French and Spanish. Mostly because of that program. The only downside is it's very expensive.

If you're serious about it though, get levels 1-5 instead of 1-3 (if they have 1-5 available for that language).

example:

RS Spanish 1-3:

RS Spanish 1-5:

If you read the reviews there, the proof is in the pudding, the majority of reviews are good.

The key to using Rosetta Stone, is to use auxiliary resources also. So that means, along with using Rosetta Stone, try listening to music with lyrics in that language, or watch a movie in that language. I also strongly suggest you get a grammar book. Also for Korean and Mandarin - you want to get a book with the alphabet.

They have a few languages. It's EXACTLY like Rosetta Stone, but only costs $99 for the entire program. In some ways it's actually better. They currently don't have a Korean option (but will soon it seems) but they have spanish and mandarin.

Either way you go, both programs are solid options and worth the $$$. After all, you ARE investing in yourself.

If you will like to discover Spanish then, the easiest way to do that is with a program
