I want to say I received this storybook from my cousin for Christmas

J'ai recu ce livre des contes par mon cousin pour Noel

And how do you say 'because it was the first storybook I ever owned and it has many good memories'

parce qu'il a ete (or etait?) le premiere livre de contes que j'avais et il avait beaucoup de bonnes memoires.

The problem is I don't know when I should be using imparfait or when to use passe compose?

J'ai recu ce livre des contes de mon cousin pour Noel.

Parce que c'etait le premiere livre des contes que j'ai jamais eu et il me fait revenir des bonnes souvenirs.



Use the imparfait if you did it more then once in the past. ex. I used to go to the movies with Jack.

Use the passe compose if you only did it once in the past. ex. I went to the movies with Jack.
