Hi all, I am currently learning Spanish, but I also really want to learn Hindi (I have a lot of Hindi speaking friends, And love Indian culture). I am a native English speaker. Most of my friends always use the English alphabet when talking in Hindi (like gaandu, etc, instead of the Hindi alphabet). So I was just wondering, to be able to converse and learn Hindi, would I need to learn Hindi script/alphabet?, or can I just use the English alphabet like most of my friends converse in?.Thanks Corey

Yes, the early stages of most basic language grammars will give the text initially as a transliteration of the script of the target language; this is a letter by letter conversion with the word 'transliteration' from the Latin words 'litera' meaning letters and 'trans' meaning across.

By extension this also gives a rough approximate of the sound although I'm not sure how this would work when transliterating English which is an extremely non phonetic language, meaning that there is a big gap between the spelling and the pronunciation; this problem does not exist to such an extent in other languages.

The Devananagri alphabet is used to write in Hindi as well as a number of other Indian and Nepali languages and it's a bit of a stumbling block with about thirty rather complicated and irregularly shaped consonants and another fifteen or so similarly problematic vowel shapes; there are further problems in terms of vowels which are written before the consonant although they are sounded after it. There is an extremely hairy problem in terms of what are known as conjunct characters where two consonants are run together to produce a composite character and any of the thirty consonants can combine with each other to give a possible nine hundred combinations although admittedly most of them are recognisable from their individual shapes.

You would be able to learn the early stages of the language without any knowledge of the script and even all of the language.

Well I suggest you to learn letters to because without it you will not able speak Hindi word right.Hindi use Devanagari (देवनागरी ) Letters which are very phonetic in nature means Hindi is written as its spoken and spoken as its written there is no hidden sound and one letter make only one sound .Its very beautiful script and easy also . you will became master in it with just 1 week of practice then you will able to speak Hindi nicely with correct accent and its also help you to type it in roman letters with correct spellings .After that you can also browse through many Hindi websites ,Books and also will be very useful if you visit India .

I have learned Hindi as second language in school and its a very beautiful script.I love it and best of luck for your Hindi lesson .

You can learn the language without the script but if you ever plan on reading Hindi or visiting India, you will need to know the script.
