I have to say that although born in Scotland and educated there, I never heard anybody ever speak a word in Gaelic. Occasionally you see the odd road sign with Gaelic on it, but that's about it!

You need to understand that there have historically been two languages spoken in Scotland, Gaelic (a Celtic language cery close to Irish Gaelic) and Scots English. In earlier times, people also spoke Welsh and Pictish!

In the last two hundred years, Gaelic has been in retreat, nowadays it's only really spoken in the Hebrides, but there is an attempt at reviving it. Scots English exists in various dialects; I'd guess most people most of the time speak something close to Standard English but with Scots dialect features and pronunciation. Scots English is evolving in various ways butis far from dying out.

Yes.

Some Scottish schools are now being taught about Scots language. It is increasing. Needs more support to bring it anywhere back to the level.
