Hej
Bonjour
Hola

2016-02-10 08:41:13 UTC
My native language is English, so I say "hello."
The English word "hello," is simply a greeting. Other languages have equivalent forms with different basic meanings, quite different from English. Many languages use something that might be a literal translation of "Good day." which sounds a bit stilted in English.
For instance, Russian has здравствуйте, which is literally the imperative, "Be healthy."
More informal, "привет," might be closer to "hi."
Germans say "hallo," but that's more "look out" than a greeting. .

Apparently, a blank stare or a dirty look is "Hello" in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA because that is what I get 99% of the time that I say hello to someone.

In Persian the most common way to say hello is salam, but it's not really Persian. It's an Arabic loanword.
Hello in Persian is doroud which is like saying greetings or salutations. This is less common, and more formal and polite, but it is true Persian and not Arabic.

Where I grew up, in what is now the London borough of New Ham, one said "Watcher!" which is a garbled mispronunciation of "What cheer?". In the US I learned to substitute "Hi!". and in Brazil "Tudo bem?" (i.e. is everything going O.K.?). Francophones, if they are on friendly terms will exchange "Ça va" ("Going well," responded to by an echo). Spanish says it back to front, "Olá!" Italian can use "Ciao" (Your sarvent, sah!) on both meeting and departing, which is not unknown in Brazil, but there they spell it "Txau". Ozzies tend to favour "g'day" (short for "good day").

In Greece we say "Γειά"(Ghiá).
Actual fun fact, "Γειά"(Ghiá) originates from"Υγεία"(Ighía), which means "Health"; so practicaly, when you greet someone it's like you're wishing them good health.
