Press option then type the U key while holding the option key. Then let go of the option key, and retype the U. The umlauts will appear on top of the u.

The Option key is a great answer if you're one of the minority of people who has a Mac. As you didn't state what OS you have we'll assume you have Windows.
ä = Alt+0228
ö = Alt+0246
ü = Alt+0252
ß = Alt+0223
Each of these requires the numeric keypad to be used. You can find the other codes for other languages by pulling up the Character Map (Windows+R, type 'charmap') and then finding the letters and viewing the Alt+ code in the lower right corner.
To make capital versions of the umlauted letters above, just subtract 32 from each code.
There are two sets of codes available for typing these letters, a 3-digit and a 4-digit. I prefer the 4-digit as (a) they can be looked up in CharMap, (b) they are also used in HTML coding, for example & # 0 2 2 8 ; (without spaces between) to output an "ä".
