I take Spanish class at my high school and i can understand it pretty well, i just screw up the verb tenses a lot. I really want to know several languages. If i want to be fluent in Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and French what would be the best way to learn them so my prior knowledge of the other languages helps me? Like if i were to become fluent in Spanish then learn Italian would i be able to speak Portuguese easily? Would French hep me learn the other languages? Also what is the best way to become fluent in a language?

Once you conquer one language the others become much easier. Even more true if you planning to concentrate in latin languages.

Spanish and Portuguese are quite similar. Italian is easy because it is not fast paced.

But to really dominate any language you need to work on it and maybe spend some time on a country that speaks that language.

Good luck. I speak three languages myself. I am fluent but still learning.

Although Spanish and Portuguese are very similar when you consider language syntax, a lot of the vocabulary is different.

When it comes to listening and speaking, Portuguese has nasal vowels; Spanish doesn´t. In fact, Portuguese and French are very nasal languages. On the other hand, Spanish and Italian have very little nasalization.

French and Portuguese have more complex verbal conjugations than Spanish and Italian. So if you start with French and Portuguese, learning Spanish and Italian will be easier. But since you already understand and speak Spanish, improve your Spanish and use it as a parameter to sort out the differences related to these other languages.

i don't know. but the key to learning any language is: learning the most common verbs, learning a bunch of vocab, get familiar with the grammar, practice on workbook questions and revise vocab rergularly, develop your listening skills by listening to the language either on tv or radio or watching movies in that language, and regularly speaking it and learning pronunciation. if you screw up tenses then i'm not sure if you have a talent for learning languages well, but the key is always hard work.

If you are screwing up Spanish, I think you'd best concentrate on learning it properly instead of trying to be the Great Linguini Linguist!
