take a look is when you ask someone to look at what you are looking at. Will you take a look at this magazine. Or Will you take a look at this news special.

look by itself is used more often. I am looking at this picture. I am looking out the window. Look at this_____.

"Take a look" does mean "look." The only difference is that by saying 'take a look' you are requesting someone to examine something and then make a judgement. You should expect someone to give you there opinion if you say 'take a look', in some cases you can expect if from 'look'-Example: if you walk outside and see a car turned on it's side, you could say "look at that" and it would mean the same thing as "take a look at that" because naturally a person will have an opinion about seeing the car. A case where 'take a look' wouldn't mean the same thing as 'look' might be if you and your daughter(pretend you have one if you dont) come out of a burning building and you're fine but worried about your daughter. If a friend runs up to you and you say, 'look at my daughter, they might just look at her and say 'she'll be okay' because they think you're are sad because you're daughter is scared. But if your friend comes and you say, "take a look at my daughter," they will know that you want them to look at her and tell you if she's okay (not hurt or traumatized). 'Take a look' doesn't have to be so serious. You can brag about getting something great "take a look at my new car" or if you were poor and became rich, you might say "take a look at me now". Again, you're expecting an opinion. But don't worry too much about it, some people use it just like 'look' all the time. Hope that helped.

More or less, "to take a look at something" best conveys an idea like "einen Blick auf etwas werfen". It will most often be used with "have" as in "we had a look at it..."

For example:

"I had a look at some new CDs today but decided I didn't want any."

[My dodgy translation :) Ich habe heute eben einen Blick auf was neue CDen geworfen, aber entschloss endlich das ich keine davon kaufen wollte.]

"I had a look at that new TV show you told me about, and it's fantastic!"

[Ich habe das neue TV-Program, worueber du mich erzaehlt hast gesehen, und es ist fantasisch!"

Yes, we use "take a look at", "have a look at" often, all the time in fact. It's commonly used to mean a casual inspection as opposed to a serious investigation. "A glance" might be a synonym. It's pretty much standard English, I wouldn't call it colloquial.

"Look!" invites somebody to look at something carefully, i.e. to drive his or her attention towards something. The point is that you want him or her to see the same thing(s) that you are watching.

"Take a look" invites somebody to look at something for a special purpose, and for a short span of time. For example, you may wish to know what they think about it.

In fact there's a very subtle difference. If you see a UFO, you may shout to your friend(s) either "Look!" or "Take a look!" or "Look! Take a look at that!".

take a look just means to look. i don't really think it is any different than look . . . i cant think of any examples where its different. it can be in questions too. as in "why don't you take a look at that book?"

I use it as a pickup line. Instead of thinking up clever lines I sidle up next to a woman and smell her until I acheive erection. When she turns my way I simply point with my thumb and say " Take a look." They either slap me or do me. Simple.
