Hi. I have some questions about English. Could you help me?

First one is...

More than half of the freshmen at selective colleges, public and private, come from the highest-earning quarter of households.

In this sentence, what does a selective college means? College, selective college? what's diffrence?

Secone one is...

As for the way Laudable spends its money, I can assure you that your professors aren’t overpaid. But I am. I take home more money at Laudable than anyone else (save some of the clinical physicians over at our hospital and several coaches).

---> What does the meaning of the word "save"? It means "except for"?

I welcome you all — those of you who will heed my advice, and those who will waste their dollars and ours. Whatever, count yourself lucky. Now you know about the money. See you, maybe, in 55 months.

---> What does means when you say "count yourself lucky"?

Please don't go way and help me out

Special Ed's got the best answer as far as I can see! Some of the others seem a bit confused ...

1. a selective college is a college that can pick the best students - because it's a popular college, and it can select the most intelligent and hard-working applicants.

(If they meant that they got data from a selection of colleges, they would have used the word 'selected' - not 'selective'!)

2. You're right - as you know!

3. 'count yourself lucky' means ALMOST the same as 'you are very lucky' - but with a twist! 'Count yourself lucky' has overtones of 'be grateful that it wasn't a lot WORSE!!'

Are you reading someone's speech or trying to grasp what someone wrote to you? Well, here's my take:

Selective Colleges are more prestigious. They are the cream of the crop in terms of being reputable, well known, and usually hard to get into. Think Harvard, Yale, or Princeton and compare it to another school like Remington College---see the difference?

You're right on the word Save. It meant that this person makes more than anyone else but the physicians and coaches may take an exception to that, because they probably DO make more.

"Count yourself lucky" has no underlying meaning except what it simply states. In essence--You're one of the lucky ones.

1.) A college is the same as a university. Selective means "high level." So a selective college means a good university.

2.) You are exactly right. "Save" in this sentence, means "except for." Good job!

3.) It means "think of yourself as a lucky person."

I hope this helps. Good luck with your studies.

Count yourself lucky = consider yourself lucky

Save = except for

Selective college is a college which doesn't admit everyone who applies; there are levels of selectivity and most people are talking about the highly selective colleges when they say "selective

Selective Coleges in this case means that (in doing the research to write this) they randomly chose colleges and used their statistics.

Save in 2 does mean except for.

The last one count yourself lucky, is in a paragraph that doesn't seem to explain it well. It means that something was likely to bad happen, and didn't. Or if you asked a friend to get you a lotto tic w/ # 4,7,9,6...and they accidently got it with 4, 7, 9, 2 and it turned out to be winner...so you would coubt yourself lucky that he messed up.

FIRST ? ..simply means from selected colleges..ie not all colleges just the ones that were chosen for their opinion.

SECOND ?...save means 'except for' or 'everything(body) but'

THIRD ?...consider yourself fortunate

i don't know the second one but about the third one i should tell you that it means:

re selective college.

Could only mean prestigious college that can pick and choose their students...high standards..high tuition...selective.

save=except

the words "count yourself lucky" doesn't seem right.

It seems to include everybody...those who heeded advise and those who didn't
