i found a kitten and named it la mer. in my french book, in the english to french dictionary it means "the sea" but in the french to english dictionary it means "the ocean", so which is it? or is there even a difference since the ocean and sea are the same thing?

also my cat is a boy. but "la mer" would be feminine, but i like giving my cats titles to their names (i have one named "the mit") so would i keep his name la mer or change it to le mer? it would stay la, right?

l'océan - the ocean [masculine noun]

le large - the open sea [masculine noun]

given that your cat is a male cat [ and not, I assume, a human boy] you might prefer a masculine noun... but be sure that whatever the gender of your cat, it does not affect the gender of French nouns, or nouns in any other language, in any way. La mer remains la mer.
