Question:
Have you learned a new word today?
2006-10-21 15:40:58 UTC
I think it's important to learn a new word and use it every day!

Today I discovered the word 'distaff' - as a noun, the sphere of work by women; as an adjective, characteristic of a woman.

Do you have a new word too?

In archaeology the word distaff is used in surveying.

Basically one has to take a measurement of angle using a thodolyte and a staff pole. The angle from the theodolite to the pole is the "staff measurement". Sometimes, for accuracy, another theodolite is set up next to the staff pole and another staff pole is set up near the first theodolite. This second measurement, used as a comparsion of the first is the "distaff measurement".

This is not a common term but is occasionally used.

xanthodont - a person with yellow teeth. That is my word of the day.

Great suggestion.

If we learnt a new word everyday ,everyone would speak and write better.

We can also try that with another languages

. This is not my 1st. so, I keep looking for new words all the time.

But of course it's a never ending story.

But learning languages is one of the most interesting things we can do.

NO es asi?? (Isn't it like that???)

Going through this site, I have encountered many new "words", all jibber-jabber to me though! I refuse to work out what the "youth" are talking about with their mis-spelt words, and just try to turn the "words" around to make them look foolish!
