I understand that 42% of Mumbai's residents are native speakers of Marathi-- how many more know it as a second language? I don't know.

Most likely speakers of the two other major languages of the city (though 16 are reportedly spoken there), Gujarati and Hindi wouldn't understand Marathi. Marathi is closely related to both languages, but not closely enough to be mutually intelligible with either.

English is, though, the main language of the more affluent parts of the city (and if you're going there as a tourist I expect you'll be spending most of your time in the English-speaking parts). I've also heard that younger people have begun to mix Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi and English together to make a sort of slang unique to Mumbai. Odds are many of these people would understand Marathi too.

Dear Mikhel,

It is not true that Gujarati and Hindi doesn't understand Marathi, well that could be true when they are new to city but as time goes by they learn Marathi. Many of the migrants who leaved in city for long time understand Marathi. This is true for not only Gujarati, Hindi but also true for other Linguistic groups such as Kannada, Punjabi, Telugu, Tamil and Bengali as well. Not all these old migrants can however speak Marathi though they understand conversation. However many other do understand and also learn to speak Marathi naturally. Some others take serious efforts to learn Marathi while some totally avoid learning Marathi even while staying for lifetime in Maharashtra or Mumbai. Most of the second generation migrants however learn Marathi through school and through environment. Hence their is very large percentage of people for whom Marathi is second language. However no such survey is available to ascertain exact percentages.

Gujarati is not close to Hindi and Marathi. Gujarati is state language for Gujarati, and Marathi is state language for Maharashtra. Hindi is national language for India. All Indian in India must know Hindi. Most Gujarati who are living in Maharashtra or spend some years Maharashtra knows Marathi. Hindi is national languagee. It should learn by every Indian person who study in India. !00% Gujarati who stay in Mumbai and spend more then a year of life at Mumbai must know Marathih
