meaning of 'un abrazo' in the letter, Spanish help~~~~?

I have several Spaniard penpals to practice Spanish.
I used to have female penapls only, so i didn't care a lot when they put 'un abrazo' in the end of the letter. I finally got a male penpal, and he's from Spain. He also puts 'un abrazo' in the end of the letter.
Is it ok for male uses this to the male recipient?

"Un abrazo" is a generic term in the Hispanic culture, loosely translates to "greetings/regards.." in letters.



When I write "un abrazo a la familia" I really mean "give my regards to the family".



Is just a friendly gesture to end a letter to a friend, it signifies, "we are friends", is like a stamp of approval.



Now if I say, "Les envio un abrazo gigante" am really saying "I am sending you guys all my love"

When I write abuelita en Cuba I usually close with -abrazos y besos. Hugs and kisses.Also in South America we usually greet women,neighbours,family and strangers with a hug and kisses.
