Do Welsh people really say "hiya," like on "Gavin and Stacey," or is that a Stacey thing?

Just finished watching the series and I've begun saying "hiya" like they do, because it's so darn addictive. Is it a Welsh thing, a British thing, or just a Stacey thing? (I've been to Wales, but not since I was 9...) Thanks! :)

Real (Welsh speaking) Welsh people don't say that... it's only the English-speaking ones from Barry which are on Gavin and Stacey.... nothing like the rest of us.
