What's the difference between "eres" and "es"?

Question

I've asked how to say "You are very sexy" and my Spanish friend told me "Tu eres muy simpatico." But I've read that simpatico means basically just "nice". I also see "es" instead of "eres" in some responses. I'm assuming it has to do with formality/slang of the verb and the conjugation. The jist is--my best friend who is always saying things in Spanish to me (to try to rile me up) and having me try to guess what he's saying. Now it's MY turn!! :-) I want to say "You are very sexy" to him and I was just wondering what was proper with this. Thanks!

The difference between "eres" and "es" (to mean "you are") is that "eres" is the familiar. You would use it when speaking to close friends and family. "Es" is the formal. You would use it talking to strangers, older people, etc. However, this is oversimplified; there are places in the Spanish-speaking world where only one of these is used for everyone, and there are differences between exactly who it "tu" and who is "usted" in different sub-cultures, as well.

Tu Eres means you are. Tu es is grammatically incorrect. Simpatico does mean just nice. There is no way to exactly translate the word sexy. Anyone would just simply say "tu eres sexy" but if you want to say something else that resembles it you can say "tu eres guapo" you are handsome" and in slang "Tu estas bueno" which means you are hot. And if you want you can add "muy": "Tu eres muy sexy/guapo" that means very.



You cannot use "es" because it means "is" and even if you translated to English is wrong. "you is sexy". You use "es" when you are talking about someone else singular. "el es guapo"

It's a matter of conjugation. The English "is" translates as "es". The English "You are" may be "tú eres" (if you're talking to a person you have an informal relationship with) or else "usted es" (if you have a more formal relationship with the other person).



By the way, in several Latin American countries, we say "vos sos" instead of "tú eres" for the informal "you are".



And in the plural, in Spain they say "vosotros sois" (informal) and "ustedes son" (formal). In Latin America, though, we always say "ustedes son" (for formal and informal registers alike).

"Tu eres muy sexy" if you are telling the person directly or if you're commenting to somone about someone else, then you would say, "El es muy sexy" or "Ella es muy sexy"



I don't really think there is a direct translation of sexy in Spanish.

Eres means YOU ARE and Es means just a plain IS. In your example it would be, TU ERES MUY SEXY(YOU ARE VERY SEXY) If you say EL ES MUY SEXY, it means HE IS VERY SEXY. ES is also used as the formal you are, USTED ES MUY SEXY (YOUARE VERY SEXY) USTED = TU, one being formal, the latter informal.
