Ai is the general form of love in Japanese, and the symbol for love is the same in Kanji (the Japanese written language) as it is in Chinese, even though the pronounciation is different. This link provided will show you a picture of the symbol meaning love--and only love. No certain forms of love like your friend had:

You can do what you want but this is just a story/opinion. I had watched an episode of Tattoo Highway and this girl had a simple word like that in Hebrew and she ended up getting it covered up because she was sick of explaining it to everyone. So just so you know everyone and anyone that sees the tattoo is going to ask what it says and why. There are so many different languages and script to get it written in take your pick

In both Chinese and Japanese, love is pronounced 'ai'. It's also the same character if you use Kanji (Chinese derived character). I believe the mistress love tattoo may have been in hiragana (Japanese phonetic characters). Here is a picture of the character: http://www.chinese-page.com/chinese_character_tattoos/love.gif

Hey hun. I have a chinese tattoo meaning to dream.

go into your tattoo artist and ask him what the real one is. usually they have a book that has all of the real ones in it.

the chinese love that you will search on google will be the one everyone has. just remember your friend may speak a different dialect from the main dialect.

just like spanish countries speak in different ways.

ask your artist they will hook you up good. but make sure you check the internet before it should be similar to the common one shown! Also look for chinese love tattoos that people already have tattoo`d on them. it means they may of done research

真 = true

愛 = love

真愛 =true love

p/s: both are same in japanese(kanji writing) and mandarin.
