so im an australian croatian. me and my siblings grew up speaking english at home, with broken croatian here and there. i really want to keep the language going so i can eventually teach my own kids and keep family traditions alive.

i am really keen to learn and would like to know if anyone else has had success in learning a second language and how they went about it, how much you need to dedicate to study each night, and how long it would take to hold basic conversations. i know the easiest way to learn would be living in the country but that is not an option for me. any help is much appreciated. thanks.

Pozdrav dragi prijatelju!

I think it's wonderful that you want to keep the language alive to teach your own kids. My family's is Gaelic and so glad to have learned a lot of it.

Besides Gaelic, I've needed knowledge of other languages because of my job - I'm a genealogist. So, the basics of German, Spanish, and French were of concern for me. The best way to learn is obviously being in that country, but I know few people that could just get up and move like that. So, second-best for me was to take any classes I could, check out books and videos from the library, keep pocket size dictionaries handy for german-english, spanish-english and so on.

I took the time to blindly pick five words a day out of the dictionaries - rewrote the word several times and even their definitions - by doing that and saying them outloud my retention was a lot better. We have fests each year from the different countries and I always go. I even found clubs - organizations that speak the languages so I could practice.

What do you p.c. to earnings a 2d language for? do you p.c. to strengthen your profession opportunities - wherein case learn a perplexing language that has actual employment potential in case you grasp it - chinese language, eastern or Arabic as an occasion. Or is it fairly for entertainment and and a undertaking - wherein case French or Spanish. Or why no longer think of a few suited language which in case you may learn how to communicate it nicely will open up one somewhat amazing united states to you: Italian. further German, nonetheless no longer precisely suited, will a great deal advance your satisfaction in Germany, Austria, Switzerland. remember for an English speaker the languages which use an analogous alphabet are lots much less complicated. And remember back that there is no longer lots component in getting to grasp a minority language like the Scandinavian languages or Dutch,

I am Chinese and my major is English. When I learn second language, I like to watch English TV series or read many English novels. Reading paper in second language is easy to accumulate vocabularies. I usually read English materials one hour per day.
