Ok so I'm trying to learn japanese but idk where to start. Should i learn the language first then learn how to read or write or the other way around. I know how to say colors, most animals, months of the year, numbers, some fruits, really basic greetings but i can't read or write them. So i was thinking about rosetta stone but it looks like it doesn't go into depth about hiragana, katakana, kanji. I'm only 13 but i really want to learn japanese. I do karate so i also know japanese from that and anime.so do you know any good software or somthing for under $100 that will help me learn and understan the language and japanese grammar. Or any beginner websites. Anything is highly appreciated!

How about watching Japanese anime or films with English subtitles, and sometime just check the sound (Japanese) and the meaning (English)? Or making friends with Japanese living in the States.

isweet, first of all: No, don't ever get Rosetta Stone. It's not only freaking expensive but also a plain crappy piece of software. There are much better resources on the web that you can use to aid you in your Japanese learning.

What I would recommend you do instead is to get an e-guide called "Master Japanese". That is NOT a textbook (which are terribly ineffective), but a guide that will teach you exactly what you have to do in order to truly master the Japanese language. You can find information about it here:

I wish you success! :D

iTunes has an podcast you can subscribe to for free. Its called Japanese Pod 101. Its really good and have a website you can sign up for too. There you can learn to write the three Japanese writing system.

You might want to take a look at this website where there are some basic Japanese lessons. There are also many Japanese words and vocabulary available.

Try livemocha.com where you will be able to interact with native speakers of the language, both spoken and written.

well first you need to be born in japan, with a Japanese family and then go to Japanese school. that would be a great start.

All of above can be download for free.

I recommend that you shoud download and printout all of them and practice hiragana and katakana.

After you memorize hiragana and katakana all, then you should go to kanji.

hiragana and katakana are very important to learn Japanese because you can write all Japanese in hiragana or katakana. some hiragana or katakana will be written in kanji. and all kanji can be written in hiragana or katakana. Good luck to memorize them!

Grammar.

I am afraid but I do not know any good site for learners to study Japanese grammar. So, I would like to show you some books.

This textbook is very good to study Japanese. Most Japanese beginners use this one in Japan.

I am afraid but I'm not sure it is possible to deliver outside of Japan in this website. But, it is possible, try to use one!

Good luck to study Japanese!
