Easiest way to learn a language? And what language should I learn?

I was wondering what the easiest way to learn a language is? I have a hard time learning in a classroom. I can memorize words, it's the grammar and structure I have issues with. I also lose interest quickly. Are there certain programs that work better than others? I was thinking that the Rosetta Stone programs might work, but they're SO expensive. Does anyone know if they work as well as they're said to? Or if there's something out there just as good and not as epensive? I would prefer a program that can keep my interest, and also address my issues with grammar and structure.

Finally, should I learn Spanish or German? I want to learn German the most, but I know learning Spanish will be extremely useful soon if I stay in the USA.

The best way to learn a language is by getting a lot of input, and by practice. You need to hear the language on a regular basis. If you can't afford to spend time in an immersion program, or move to the country that speaks it, that's fine. Just try to find as many sources of that language as possible. Movies, TV shows, songs, magazines, books. And try to practice it, too. If you can't actually talk with someone who speaks it with you, find a pen pal, or go into message boards in that language. Or speak to yourself!



I'd say Spanish is easier to learn only because there's a lot more material available in Spanish: DVD audio tracks, tv shows, magazines, etc. But you can learn whichever language you are interested in. If you choose to learn a language just because you think you have to, it will be much harder than if you choose a language you want to learn. That's why I've taken two years of German classes, and one semester of Russian. People think I'm weird for learning languages that won't be "useful" to me here, but I was interested in those languages.

You might be able to take out a computer program from the library.

I think the language you should learn is the language you WANT to learn--although (I am sort of speaking out of my hat here because I don't know Spanish at all--I've lived in Switzerland for 5 years and do have some German) it seems to me that Spanish grammar is "simpler" than German, so if you're better at memorizing words, you might be better with Spanish.

The best way to learn grammar and structure of a language is trying to understand movies, theater and books in the language you want to learn. I learned English watching a lot of movies while reading the dialogs in English on the TV. Then, I watched the movie again without the dialogs. I recommend you "Amores perros" (Mexico), "Peloteros" (Peru), "Dragones" (Peru) and Pedro Almodovar's movies (Spain). It's also great if you buy a good book of grammar and check the movies with the book. It will keep your interest! Good luck!

You can learn any language only by immersing yourself completely in the culture of that language (movies, newspapeers, foreign friends). There are no shortcuts, no matter what these companies touting "Be fluent in Swahili in 3 hours" say. Why German? Why Spanish? Why not Chinese or Arabic?

I'd go for spanish and try to find someone else who already know the language so that you can practice speaking with them. It's much easier if you have someone who you can talk with. Or, better yet, go live somewhere where you're surrounded by the language.

one day in my language class, the teacher said noone could learn a foreign lingo, if they dont have an affair from that language. She also said a french kiss was a must and i am not kidding, all of us were so very surprised when we saw a 65 yr old female teacher said that....

Have a boy friend from that culture then, i guess i works a lot...Regards...
