I said "hola carino" to a Latina once obviously meaning "hiya love!" (and she knew the intention was not sexual or anything like that) she looked at me funny and said "that is sexual harrassment", WTF! I was just being polite and believe me sex never even came acrossed my mind at all! So does carino mean "love" or "hun" or does it mean something else?
Should I have use something different like "hola amor" or "hola miel"
Thanks for replying

Hi honey
Hi love
Hi sweetheart/sweetie
Hi babe
If it is a close friend, you can say that, but just as you would not say to an English speaking person, "Hi honey/love/sweetheart, etc." to a person you don't know or barely know, but you say it in Spanish either.
These are endearing terms reserved for close friends, lovers, family.
Observe and listen to those Spanish speaking individuals and see how they address one another. I am sure you've heard the quote, "When in Rome, do as Romans do."

I lived in Spain for years and only ever used it when talking to my girlfriend. Generally it is used for someone close and it is 'cariño' is used when speaking to a boy (or man) whereas cariña is the femine. So, that might have shown offense or ignorance!! Lol. But not sexual - parents use it when talking to their children.
Hola 'chica' would have been best. It means 'girl' literally but is used often affectionately (again not sexual) - to be honest though, she sounds an idiot.

It means hi love. You said carino if you know her or if she is a friend. If you said hola amor is even worst. If you said hola miel it will sound funny. Just said hola. Girls that are really friendlycan said hola carino or hola amor. But mostly guys do not. That is why the girl took it seriously. Just said hola , como estas. Or hola que tal. Or just hola

It's a slang (southern influenced) way of saying "pretty". (They are saying you have a pretty, pleasing to the ear voice or way of speaking)
