Caesar dixit P. Sextium Baculum gravibus vulneribus confectum esse et iam se sustinere non posse: reliquos esse tardiores et nonnullos, deserto proelio, excedere, ac tela vitare; hostes vehementer pila iacere, et ab utroque latere instare; et rem esse in angusto vidit; neque ullum esse subsidium quod submitti posset. Milites signa inferre et cohortes laxare iussit, quo facilius gladiis uti possent. Caesar suos hortari conatus est, *** periculum calamitatemque instare videret.

If this is Caesar's Gallic War, ( as it might well be from the wording) you can probably get a translation on the Internet, if you can identify the paragraph and the number of the book.
