Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear! If you think this is Australian, then you certainly are a "naïve US American".
The word "git" is 100% British and means "an annoying person", or "an unpleasant person".
Common expressions include "Stupid git!" "What a git!" "He's a right git!"
Although the word is not taboo, it is not a very pleasant thing to call someone.

git (spoken) ---- an unpleasant and annoying person. This is an offensive word.
