I'm writing a commentary about Non-English speakers in America and I need some data to prove or disprove my opinion. Just yes or no will be good. Thanks!

Not particularly. It's when they make absolutely no effort to learn or speak English and expect everyone else to accommodate them that I get annoyed.

My mother's friend said that he once went into a gas station, and the employee only spoke Spanish. Now that is not acceptable. English may not be the official language, but it is the language spoken the most here. If someone is multilingual, and chooses to speak a foreign language with others that understand them, that's fine. If they can't speak English, but are not tourists, that is not fine by me, unless they haven't been here long, or are learning. That, I understand.

If I moved to France, I would be expected to speak French, so French citizens wouldn't have to bend over backwards to help me fit in.

No, it doesn't bother me. But like another person said, there are people here for years and years that don't learn English, and they should. It's understandable if they've been here for a little bit of time and are learning. But some people are literally here for 20 years, and they speak English so poorly and expect people to know their language. For example, if you were sent to China, you would have to learn Chinese and not expect everyone to speak in English

No, I speak Polish with my family in public, so it's totally okay if someone else does in Cantonese of Spanish.

Even when I have friends at home, I'll address my parents in Polish if I'm not directly mentioning my friend. It works both ways, when at a Vietnamese friend's house, I can't understand what she says to her mom, but I just assume it's something that doesn't relate to me and it's all good.

What does annoy me are people who only speak their non-english language with people of the same ethnicity - at all times. If they can't speak English well yet, it's understandable, but sometimes it seems like people just don't want to make the extra effort to get to know someone of a different culture.

Yes, Vietnamese is my native language. I learned English when I went to school. I can also speak some Manchu, Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese Chinese, Mongolian, and some Hochdeutsch (High German). I can also speak little bit of Turkish, Russian, Albanian Levantine Syrian Arabic, and Korean.

No. America has no official language, and even if it did, our right to speak a language other than English is protected by the constitution. If it annoys someone so much, then they should ask the person what language it is that they are speaking, and get off their ***es and learn it.

HA Ha Ha Ha Ha Like really people find something better to hate then that... You know even before the Superior Race from Europe came to better the life of the Americas we had thousands of multiple languages on these continents. Do you really think your inferiority will change that?

no. "english" is a hybrid of many other languages but started by mixing "english" (as it was at the time) and french. many of our words are based on another languages words and we even use words that are not english as part of our vernacular (pronto comes to mind-spanish for now)

and: saying that people are choosing to not speak english-you've obviously never learned another language. sometimes, being frustrated is easier than being embarrassed. (i went to the DR and became conversational out of neccessity and still made my friends order food and beverages for me. even tho I could have done it myself, i was embarrassed to speak my american-accented spanish to cashiers.

No, unless it is a salesperson in a store and they can't help me because they don't speak English.

No, but it annoys me when people come into this country ILLEGALLY and expect us to accommodate them for their lack of a will to learn English.
