I know the question might sound dumb but I know a lot of others, germans for example, seem to prefer speaking english with native english speakers especially if they are not as good at speaking german. Do french people rather speak french with native english speakers, even if the english speaking person's french is horrible? Are they offended if you insist on speaking french when you can't speak it very well? I mean if you are not good at speaking french do they get annoyed if you do it anyway? I would like to practice and get better but I feel really stupid with how badly I speak it... :s

I knew a french person who did communicate with me in English - since I am German and can't French and she was French and couldn't German.

But once I watched a reportage in TV, and there was reported, that Frenchs prefer to speak their native language instead of the Universalenglish, because it is difficult for them to pronounce some English words. Also their "cultur protection laws" supports firstly French songs which are played in radio - so they don't get used as easy to the English.

I'm learning French too and this past Christmas break I went on a short exchange to France and they loved that I spoke French, even though I didn't speak very well or understand as much as I should.

They like the effort that you put into learning their language and trying to speak with them, but they also like to speak English (at least the French people I know).

Most schools teach English in France and a lot of the French want to practice their English with English speakers and they want to learn more about English.

French isn't the simplest language to be taught, however its now not too complex after you have found out some of the different romance languages...I dont know the way good they talk English, but when your touring of their nation you need to use the local language....Americans and the French are one of the so much hated travelers when you consider that they dont trouble to be taught the language of the nation they're touring....In German faculties it's essential that you are taking 2 international languages one among which have got to be English (my mother used to be born and raised in Germany)...and but you'll probly get nowhere if you don't talk German even as your there.....simply when you consider that they may be able to talk the language doesnt imply they will...
