In olden times people would be buried with a rope attached to the coffin and a bell above ground in case the person was buried by mistake. If that was the case, the person in the coffin would RING the bell, and someone would hear the bell ringing.
Because people did not expect to SEE their loved one alive again, these people, obviously, looked identical because he/she was the SAME person, were identified or called a "dead ringer", because she or he rang the bell.
