I was looking at picture of my families coat of arms and saw the words "Vix ea nostra voco" can anyone tell me what these mean? I assume it's Latin but my last name is Campbell and my family comes from the Scottish clan rather then the Irish if that helps at all.

The words "Vix ea nostra voco" are Latin and associated with the Campbell name as well as many other clans and families. The phrase means "I scarcely call these things our own". The motto relates to the principle of stewardship, that we don't really own anything, we just look after what we have throughout our lifetime.

Do you know about a stained glass window at the Episcopal church in Cold Spring, New York? It has this Latin quotation, although with 'nostro' rather than 'nostra,' and it is in memory of Katharine Campbell Clark.

David Gamble (who commissioned the Gamble House in Pasadena) also put this motto on his family 'crest.' You can see it with just a little googling around.

I'd assumed that he just invented the whole thing after he decided that he was a gentleman, but perhaps there was some ancestral link after all.

David is right in the general sense. But specifically, it means our inheritance came from others. Through wars, beheadings, marriages, and more of the sort. For example, we would not have the Argylle lands if they were not taken from the Arthur clann, but without King Arthur there would be no inheritance at all. And this holds true for many clanns, even our rivals.
