I heard it first in 1972 in "The Godfather".

Just watched it again and was wondering if it was simply F--U or if it was considered more vulgar for the period the film was set in. (Scene where Talia Shire gets beaten up by husband.)

It is obviously Italian! Didn't now how it was spelt.

It mesns f.u.

More literally "go do it in your a-- (other word for 'donkey'.)

Explanation:

Ba fungu

Ma fungoo

Va fangu

(etc etc etc)

Are all variations on one theme: what the Italian expression "va' a fa' 'nculo" sounds like to sn English speaker.

The expression isn't "proper" Italian, anyway.

It has been assimilated into the Italian language (spelled as "vaffanculo" or "va a fanculo", and I hope that it doesn't get auto-censored. It sure does on Italuan Yahoo)

but the original " va' a fa' 'nculo" is actually Neapolitan, a language spoken in most of southern Italy, with many local dialects so different that it can be hard to understand each other, at first.

Before mass media taught everyone to speak proper Italian, sime 50 years ago, most people could only speak the local dialect of a local language, especially in rural areas... but I'm drifting off topic.

"Ba fungu" is a mispelling of "va fanculo", and it means f.u.

it could be "va fangu"(pronunced it this way)... in dialect = f.u. but the one you wrote is the way you pronunce it not the way you write it......

i´m italian..i know it doesn´t exist written like that but if you heard it from someone, italian maybe, especially if he/she is from the south,it means f.u.

It's an Italian name, it translates as Kay (yep, king arthur's brother), and comes from latin, and I was told that women said Ubi Tu Caius, Ego Caia, meant the would follow the husband as a female part of himself... I like the idea that it was meaning Joious, instead! Actually, used as Caio, Tizio e Sempronio, it means Tom, Dick and Harry, i.e. almost anyone. If you did misspell, then Ciao means both hallo and goodbye, and comes from the greeting "Sciao vostro" in Venice, meaning Your servant, sir! And that comes from 'schiavo', slave, but the origin is germanic. Sorry, got carried away... ;-) Take your choice. :)
