Question:
Why do people hate puns so much?

When someone makes a pun the first response will almost always be "Get out!"

For all the hard work that person gave to think of a well crafted pun or dad joke, all he gets in return is nothing but rejection? Shouldn't we be clapping our hands, congratulating him for his witty remarks?

One day there will be no puns on this earth, and it's because we drove them to extinction.

Why do people hate puns so much?

People don't hate puns. They wish they had thought of them first. The better the pun, the louder the groan of envy.

People don't hate puns; they simply have a need--

Either to avoid being challenged or shown up intellectually;

Or to find or feel acceptance among others who are similarly lacking in patience and understanding of others without needing to put on airs or feel superior.

Part of the problem with puns--both low humor and high humor have their places--is the miss-perception that puns need always to be taken as humorous. Much of the heretofore diversity of English (prior to the current, pseudo-intellectual dumb-ing down movement in academia), indeed originally derived from the astute inventiveness in use of puns. It is time to let go of the false insecurities regarding puns. Let them be a part of language that avoids avoidance of clarity. --S 3; 16

there will never be no puns on earth. you only wish. Puns tend to be low humor, as in not requiring much actual effort. They can sometimes be extremely funny though, despite that reputation, especially when the pun brings in several other attached ideas with it, making a multi-layered cake of humor instead of a very superficial sound-alike. Some puns are masterful witticisms. Most are not, they are the precise opposite of wit. And thus people tend to disdain them. The joke choice of the lazy or dull person.

Some real groaners are still funny and witty, but in a "I wish I did not find that funny" way. We even look at ourselves in disgust that we find that simple word game as amusing.

They don't really hate them. It's just an act.

They are seen as lazy humor. Not as sophisticated or clever as sarcasm or other forms.

Evidently their sense of humor is different from yours. Not much you can do about it.
