Ok, in real you have to separate marathi and hindi. Gujarati is quite closer to hindi than it is to marathi. So quite a large percentage, say about 99 '/. would understand hindi but only about 50'/. would understand marathi and that also he they've learnt it or they've been in Mumbai for a while.

usually , migrants adapt to a new place only if they are a minority . mumbai is a cosmopolitan city where many communities live . so , no single community can be considered to be dominant . therefore , in mumbai , the migrants continue with their traditions and language , since they dont have any compulsion to follow marathi ( for eg. if they find it difficult to buy stuff at a marathi store , due to language constraint , they can always go to another store where the shopkeeper understands their language . ). maybe they would start speaking in marathi if they migrated to a rural area in maharashtra . anyway ,i agree that avoiding local customs is not a good thing . but , at the same time , the actions of goons like raj thakeray will only make non-marathis hate marathi language and traditions . More importantly , unless learning marathi is shown to have some advantages , people wont be keen on it . For eg , throughout india , almost everyone wants to learn english , and to a slightly lesser extent , hindi . this is because both languages offer a lot of job opportunities ,etc . But , very few people wish to learn languages like bhojpuri /oriya /etc, which do not offer much .

Gujarati is not close to Hindi and Marathi. Gujarati is state language for Gujarati, and Marathi is state language for Maharashtra. Hindi is national language for India. All Indian in India must know Hindi.
Most Gujarati who are living in Maharashtra or spend some years Maharashtra knows Marathi. Hindi is national languagee. It should learn by every Indian person who study in India. !00% Gujarati who stay in Mumbai and spend more then a year of life at Mumbai must know Marathih

As this is specific to Gujarathi's in Mumbai - I would agree that they would understand Hindi (National Language, movies, etc.) much more than Marathi (Environment, local government & public agencies, etc). But a few gujarathi friends I have understand both.
